Teaching In Prison

Our teaching ministry has been growing in interesting ways, and we have the opportunities to teach in unconventional environments. Cheryl is teaching every Monday night in a women's prison where Martha Stewart was incarcerated.

Behind barbed wire, armed guards and heavy security gates, a group of 20 women are finding a new life in learning a new life management from a Christian perspective being mentored by Cheryl. It is a really exciting and refreshing time, seeing these women grow in character and faith.

Teaching in Afro-American Churches
Cheryl has also been teaching courses at Christian Cultural Centre and Allen AME Church in Queens. They are both significant Afro-American churches in New York City with congregations over 20,000 members. Christian Cultural Centre is a trend-setting modern neo-pentecostal church. Allen AME is a classic black church with a deep history in social justice.
Student Outreach
Hans led a student outreach to Holy Family Church. Over 30 sociology, social justice and Christian Spiritual Formation students joined together to help this church plant in Queens, New York. They helped in construction and clean-up of the facility, and social research to help the church to more effectively be able to reach out the people in their immediate neighborhood. we will present Pastor Lal Singh with our research findings and present an urban missions plan to help his church reach out to the neighborhood more effectively.
Film Project
Hans has been working on a documentary film project profiling the Estonian refugee movement and exile during World War 2. In partnership with the Graduate School of New School University, and through the financial support of the Estonian community in Vancouver, Canada, a short film version was premiered at a Visual Sociology Festival in New York City.  We anticipate the full version being completed by spring and film showings following thereafter.
